On Tuesday, January 12th of 2010, a magnitude—7.0 earthquake struck Haiti and left behind unimaginable destruction that has affected nearly 3 million+ people in Haiti. Officials have already come out and stated that the death toll could reach and exceed 100,000. Other officials are saying it could be 500,000 and beyond. Schools, homes, government infrastructures and many more have been levelled. Survivors are left wandering around the streets to search the rubble for family, friends and strangers crying out for help. They are left to sleep through the nights outside on the ground for fear that an aftershock will destroy any shelter they look for. There are countless stories of people compiling trash for makeshift beds or bandages for wounds. Their food supplies are scarce at best and clean water is in desperate need. The Red Cross has said that the earthquake has left about one third of Haiti’s population in need of emergency care. An immediate danger to survivors outside of food and water is respiratory ailments from breathing in the volumes of dust around them. Since the dust has yet to clear out, there could be much more despair amid the destruction.
